The 1984 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIV Olympic Winter Games, was a winter multi-sport event which was celebrated in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which at the time was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Other candidate cities were Sapporo, Japan; and Gothenburg, Sweden. It was the first Winter Games and the second Olympics held in a Communist state (the first was the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union).
