Born in 1971 in Varto, Nihat Dursun began his artistic journey at the age of eleven by drawing comic book characters, which later led him to the art of cartooning.
Early Period and First Publications (Mid-1980s–1988)
- In the mid-1980s, his drawings were published in Gırgır magazine. The editorial feedback from Oğuz Aral and comparisons to Saul Steinberg played a formative role in shaping his aesthetic perspective.
- In 1983, acquiring the Simavi Cartoon Album enabled him to discover the works of masters such as Mikhail Zlatkovsky, Gürbüz Doğan Ekşioğlu, and Necati Abacı.
- In 1988, at the age of seventeen, his exhibition titled “Bir Bilinmeyen” (An Unknown) laid the foundation of his identity as an independent artist.
International Steps and Conceptual Works (1989–1990)
In 1989, he participated in the Satire Today competition held in Italy.
In the following period, he presented his work on global platforms by participating in various international events, including Yomiuri Shimbun competitions in Japan.
Academic and Professional Development (1990–1995)
- Encouraged by cartoon artist Raşit Yakalı, Dursun intensified his creative output in Istanbul and clarified his academic career path.
- In 1990, he became a member of the Cartoonists Association and attended meetings of the Journalists’ Association in Cağaloğlu.
- During the same period, his works were published in national media such as Gırgır, Çarşaf, Hürriyet (Kelebek Supplement), Günaydın, and Fotospor.
- He studied at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Graphic Design, receiving instruction from distinguished academics such as Gürbüz Doğan Ekşioğlu, Mustafa Aslıer, Sema Ilgaz Temel, Nazan Erkmen, Fevzi Karakoç, Aykut Özbay, Sinan Baykurt, Selahattin Ganiz, Güler Ertan, and Barbaros Gürsel.
- During this period, he met Akbaba magazine cover illustrator Necmi Rıza Ayça, who offered positive feedback on his illustrations. He also had the opportunity to meet numerous renowned artists, including Semih Balcıoğlu.
- As an undergraduate student, he received several awards, including the Metropol Grand Prize, Italy Eurohumor Fest ’93 Mention Award, and multiple Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts Achievement Awards.
Media and Animation Experience
- In 1990–1991, he worked as a design assistant for Interpres and Milliyet Publishing Groups, collaborating with Sunder Erdoğan, Cihan Demirci, Arman Salepçi, and Kamil Yavuz.
- He contributed to Milliyet Kardeş magazine by coloring comic strips and met Duygu Asena during this period.
- In 1993–1994, he took part in animation projects such as “Afacan İzciler” and “The Conquest of Istanbul – Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror” at Ella Cartoon Studio, working with notable figures including Derviş Pasin, Zafer Kalkın, Faruk Bayraktar, Sefer Selvi, Mehmet Şenocak, and Turan Asan.
Technology and Digital Production
- In the early 1990s, he gained experience with digital design using systems such as Macintosh Classic, LC, and Quadra, producing projects with software such as Adobe Photoshop, PageMaker, FreeHand, and Macromedia Director.
- After graduating in 1995, he continued his work across Mac, Windows, and Linux platforms, diligently following technological developments.
